Being from Bordeaux I am passionate about its wines and I am always trying to source interesting and rare wines that are rarely found in restaurants. The idea that lies behind this last shipment coming from Bordeaux is to offer our guests at L’Ortolan some of the best wines found in Bordeaux at a very competitive price.

Bordeaux Wines at Restaurant Reading

Great wines express their typicity: not just the typicity of their vineyard, but also the typicity of their vintage!

The silky tannins and distinctive, voluptuous character of the 1990’s is what Bordeaux has best to offer. The wines are now reaching their maturity and will stay like this hopefully until 2025. Three very different but amazing 1990 Grands Crus are now in the L’Ortolan cellar; Chateau Lascombes from Margaux, Chateau Lagrange from St Julien and Chateau Balestard La Tonnelle from St Emilion.

I am also very proud to list a wine created not long ago by Mr Bourdil the former Cellar Master at Mouton Rothschild, who is now fully committed to his ‘Cherubin’ (little Angel) in St Emilion.

The project is to produce a biodynamic wine of 2 hectares taken from the vines of Chateau Angelus, one of the most acclaimed and old wineries of St Emilion, carrying the style of Chateau Angelus, pure silk and velvet, A rich, full bodied and concentrated, Bordeaux wine, offering silky, cashmere textures that’s filled with luscious, opulent, spicy dark fruit, liquorice, spice and truffle that ages extremely well.

Rare Wines at Restaurant L’Ortolan Berkshire

Chateau Petrus is without a doubt the most famous winery in Bordeaux. It’s also one of the most expensive and rarest wines. Its reputation and quality comes mainly from its very consistent and refined style. The most elegant and gentle Bordeaux, a caress for the palate and an explosion of scents given by its concentration. Pomerol, the terroir where the wine is from is not only producing very expensive wines and I am very pleased to list a recent discovery thanks to some great connections in Bordeaux, the Clos Payrol.

You wouldn’t believe it but we hold some stock of the 3 barrels produced per year (900 bottles, about 75 cases) from the 0.36 hectare plot of 100% Merlot planted to a density of 7,000 vines per hectare, 35-50 years old, and a yield of 35 hl/ha.

Clos Puy Arnaud has a history that dates back to at least 1871 in the Côtes de Castillon region. However, the modern era for the estate began in the year 2000 when Thierry Valette purchased the estate. If the Valette names sounds familiar, it should.

Thierry Valette is related to the Valette family who also own Chateau Troplong Mondot and previously, Chateau Pavie. The 11 hectare Right Bank vineyard of Clos Puy Arnaud is planted to 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard has been managed exclusively by using 100% biodynamic farming techniques since 2004.

Despite its old history the winery appears to be one of the most underrated wineries around St Emilion and is a bargain for a wine that shares all the qualities of a St Emilion but not its name and price !

French Sauternes Wine Restaurant Reading

Last but not least, aged Sauternes! These are one of the world’s greatest wines. We don’t offer a lot of Sauternes, and I like to choose it very carefully to only select the best. Doisy Védrines 1975 is our most recent addition and it will blow you away with its finesse and complex layers of marmalade, honey, honeysuckle, confit citrus and scents of yellow flowers such as freesia and iris.
